What is TessDrive?
TessDrive is a Tesla streaming device: a small, standalone unit that wirelessly brings real, full Android apps — Apple TV, Prime Video, Paramount+, Max, Netflix, YouTube and any app you install — to your Tesla's built-in web browser over its own private WiFi, controlled by touch on the Tesla screen. The apps run on the TessDrive device itself and appear on your car's display. It is not a phone, not screen-mirroring, and nothing is wired into the vehicle.
How it works
TessDrive runs genuine Android on its own hardware. It creates a private WiFi network, and your Tesla's built-in browser connects to it and displays the TessDrive screen. To your Tesla, it looks exactly like loading a website — which is something every modern Tesla browser already does. You control everything by touching your Tesla's screen, the same way you'd use any app. The only cable involved is a simple USB cable for power; nothing plugs into the car's electronics, display, or diagnostic port.
Internet comes from your phone's hotspot or WiFi you already have — there's no dedicated cellular modem and no separate data plan to buy.
What makes it different
Most ways of getting video onto a Tesla screen fall into one of three buckets, and each has a catch:
- Screen-mirroring adapters mirror your phone — which protected apps like Netflix and Prime Video detect and block, leaving a black screen with audio only.
- Wired Android boxes often require accessing the car's MCU or diagnostic connector behind interior panels, limit you to a fixed app menu, or need their own cellular plan.
- Browser-only services run inside Tesla's browser but can't install real apps or sign you into full streaming accounts the way a real Android device can.
TessDrive avoids all of that. Because the apps run on the device and it talks to the car only through the browser, protected content actually plays — picture and sound — within the quality tier each app permits on this hardware, and nothing about your car is touched, opened, or wired into. What you can watch
Because TessDrive is real Android, you install apps the way you would on any Android device — through its built-in App Installer, plus full sideloading. That means the services Tesla's built-in Theater doesn't offer — Apple TV, Prime Video, Paramount+, Max, Peacock, ESPN, Hulu — alongside Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Plex and effectively any Android app. And unlike Tesla's Theater, which only plays while parked, TessDrive keeps running for passengers while you're moving. Here's how it works, including while moving →
Which Teslas are compatible
Any Tesla with a modern browser (MCU2 or newer): all Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck, and Model S / Model X from roughly mid-2018 onward — or an older S/X that's since been upgraded to MCU2.
What TessDrive is not
It's not a phone-mirroring app, not a wired or USB-based dongle, and not an open-source community project. It does not connect to, modify, or communicate with any vehicle system — not FSD or Autopilot, not the car's firmware, not your Tesla account — so there's nothing to void and nothing to jailbreak. It does not circumvent DRM or unlock higher resolutions; content plays within the tier each app allows. It is presently an uncertified Android device with respect to Google Play Protect, which we disclose openly. And it's an entertainment device — not a secure device for banking or sensitive accounts.
Is there a subscription?
No, and there never will be. TessDrive is a one-time purchase; every feature is included and future improvements arrive free over the air for the life of the device. No subscriptions, no paywalled features, no add-on tiers.
